Welcome to Green Island!

The historic immigrant neighborhood of Green Island in Worcester, Massachusetts is experiencing “revitalization” with the new nearby baseball stadium Polar Park and related development. This website seeks to build a sense of community among the neighborhood’ residents, many of whom are new to the area. The stories here will help you explore Green Island’s rich history, which these stories seek to preserve.

This project was developed by a first-year seminar taught by Prof. Sarah Luria at the College of the Holy Cross in partnership with the Green Island Residents Group, Inc. We are grateful to the many community leaders and residents who shared their knowledge with us. The questions we sought to answer were:

  • Who benefits from Worcester’s current “revitalization”?
  • Will Green Island remain a diverse affordable community?
  • How has the neighborhood changed over time? How is it changing now?
